“I think it would be really easy to criticise the show because Goop is a multi-million-dollar brand,” she says.

“But, at the same time, I really loved the alternative and diverse approach that they took to sexuality.”

Many sexologists take a medical approach to sexual issues by focusing on “premature ejaculation or vaginismus or other kinds of what they call sexual disorders”, Ms Forbes explains.

In contrast, the show’s experts focus on communication, acts of consent, emotional safety, and family-of-origin exploration throughout the series.

The show veers away from “the intercourse-based notion of sexuality, which I have to say we’re taught at school, and is all about how to put the penis in the vagina,” Ms Forbes says.

“The approaches of practitioners was very directive but it really swung away from the stereotypical heterosexual intercourse-based notion of sexuality to what I would call an ‘outercourse’ and emotional-safety focus.”

Another example of the show’s more inclusive approach? Its refusal to only focus on orgasms.

“Even the definition of an orgasm is expanded to an energetic orgasm, which I don’t have a lot of experience with myself, but I really like the idea of it,” Ms Forbes says.

“If you … see the whole body as a sexual organ — like the skin and different zones of the body that are not necessarily regarded as erogenous zones that can be stimulating — [you can] look at what turns each person on, what they can enjoy, and what helps them to feel good about themselves and connected.”

Some critics have objected to the fact that the series includes only people in long-term, monogamous relationships, but I found this decision revealing—if people can’t communicate openly with their most intimate partner, how are they supposed to do it with strangers?

What becomes clear as the show continues, though, is how little the people participating know about themselves, and how conditioned they’ve been to avoid intimacy rather than be truly vulnerable. “Your intimate relationship is a meditation in everything that’s wrong with you,” Paltrow quotes one of her past therapists saying in the first episode, not in judgment but to say that our sex lives are usually a symptom or an expression of other parts of our psyches.

“Our culture teaches us it’s not okay to not know about sex, or to not know exactly what to do,” a therapist says in Sex, Love & Goop. The most striking truth the show reveals is that no one knows anything at all, unless they ask.

It felt so rare to see the imperfect, if still attractive, naked body of a woman in her forties on television that, as I watched the episode, I almost gasped. (And, in the days following, I could swear that it continued to reverberate in my mind, affecting the way I looked at my own self in the mirror.) When discussing mirror-work with Boehm, even Paltrow seems to be moved. “I drive myself really hard to not age and to not be disappointed in the way I look, and I’m still disappointed in the way I look,” she says. “The next phase of work in my life has to be around real acceptance.” “Sex, Love & Goop” is a step in the right direction.
